Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
