A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
